Visiting The Dead Sea
If you are planning to take a Christian tour of Israel, there will be many amazing and exciting places that you will want to visit. Traveling in Israel is interesting for those who are Christians, because they have heard about these places and now they actually get to see them. The Bible is based on the life of the Jews and therefore, the land of Israel takes one back to a time and place from long ago. The Dead Sea is one place that every Christian needs to visit.
The Dead Sea is also known as the Salt Sea, Bahr Lut, Sea of Sodom and Gomorrah, Lake of Asphalt, Sea of the Devil, Stinking Lake, Sea of Zoar, the Eastern Sea, and Sea of the Plain. The Bible refers to it as the "Sea of the Arabah" or the "Salt Sea." The high mineral content in this body of water allows nothing to live within its waters. The Dead Sea is 41 miles long and 11 miles wide and although it is called a “sea,” it is actually an inland lake. The Judean Mountains lie to the west and the Moab Mountains are on the east. On the left bank of the Dead Sea lies Masada. The Dead Sea is not talked about in the Bible as much as some other bodies of water such as the Sea of Galilee. However, in II Chronicles in the Bible, the Ammonites and Moabites crossed a shallow part of the Dead Sea when they attacked King Jehoshaphat. The sea was a barrier and blocked traffic to Judah from the east. The prophet Ezekiel prophesied that the Dead Sea would one day be filled with fresh water and fish would live there, with fishermen fishing from the sea.
The Syro-African Rift is a 4000-mile fault line in the earth’s crust in which the Dead Sea is located. Because the shoreline is located 1300 feet below sea level, water never has to be drained from this body of water. Every day, seven million tons of water evaporates from the Dead Sea, but because the minerals don’t evaporate, the salt and mineral content continues to increase.
The salt content can range anywhere from 26-35%, which is nearly ten times as salty as the oceans in the world and twice as salty at the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The Dead Sea Works company is located on the southwest side of the lake where about 1600 people work, harvesting the minerals from the water. Potash is currently the most valuable mineral extracted from the Dead Sea, which is used for making fertilizer. Another important quality of the Dead Sea is the clay and mud in the soil of the body of water. Mineral mud can be applied to the body or used as a face mask. The absorbent qualities of the mud cleanse the skin and removes grime. This then allows the skin to become nourished and healthy once again. Due to the therapeutic and healing qualities of the minerals and salts in this water, there are many products on the market today with Dead Sea ingredients.
One fun activity that people enjoy when they travel Israel is to take a dip in the Dead Sea. You can't really swim in the water at all because of the high salt content. In other words, you just float! The water is warm and salty and has been known to help with certain skin ailments. Be sure and wear water shoes because the salt on the bottom of the sea is sharp. The salt water will burn any open sores on your body and it will also burn your eyes if you put your face in the water. Visiting the Dead Sea is a must for anyone who is on an Israel tour. There are many outdoor activities in this area that you may find interesting. The experiences you have here will last a lifetime.
