The Fred Allen Show Was An Old Time Radio Shows Classic

Fred Allen was the star of the long-running "The Fred Allen Show" that aired from 1932-1949, although it went my many names. The listeners really enjoyed this show because it was very entertaining and provided a lot of humor and laughter for Sunday nights.

Allen worked hard to produce Old Time Radio Shows that incorporated the events of the day. Using newspaper clippings, he was able to compile a script from the various stories. A lot of his humor stemmed from the lesser known news stories of the day.

Born John Florence Sullivan on May 31, 1893 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Fred was raised by his aunt after his mother died when he was age three. Fred joined the Boston Public Library after learning to play the piano from a young age. He even managed to learn to juggle all by himself. Thanks to the pushing together of these interests, he could see how comedy works and so improve his skills to reflect his understanding.

As he started his career, he competed in many small-time contests. Performing in vaudeville influenced productions allowed him to travel the world. "The Passing Show" soon drew Fred away from vaudeville and to Broadway theater. It was while working on this show he met his wife, Portland Hoffa.

Eventually, he kick started his career in old time radio shows when he presented The Linit Bath Review on CBS Radio. In 1933 his show became the Salad Bowl Review sponsored by Hellman's Mayonnaise. Finally, in 1934 he hosted the Sal Hepatica Revue, which later became the Hour of Smiles. It was renamed Town Hall Tonight a few months later and finally became The Fred Allen Show.

Until late June 1949, The Fred Allen Show continued to go strong. As time passed, Portland his wife would join him as his partner in comedy crime. However, a fued with friend Jack Benny is what Allen is probably best known for.

With Benny, Allen started a so-called public 'feud'. The writers for both comedians were eventually called together in session to try and capitalize on the growing popularity of the feud that was more of a happy accident. The feud grew in its legendary status while the entertainers stayed professional about it all. It's In the Bag and Love Thy Neighbor were two films that they both in fact starred in.

After his biggest stint in Old Time Radio Shows ended, he frequently made appearances on The Big Show. Writing was one outlet he took full advantage of in order to fully express his thoughts. Treadmill to Oblivion and Much Ado About Me were his two autobiographies.

During a walk in the late night, Fred Allen had a heart attack which was fatal, he passed away at 61 years of age. In 1988, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. While he is long gone, his old time radio show recordings, not to mention books as well, have stood the test of time as a reminder of the humor he brought to the world.
